El reglamento actual pide a atletas transgénero que quieran participar en la categoría femenina mantener su tasa de testosterona bajo el límite de 5 nmol/L durante doce meses. 

Las atletas intersexos, por ejemplo la emblemática sudafricana Caster Semenya, deben desde abril de 2018 mantener su tasa de testosterona bajo el límite de 5 nmol/L durante seis meses para participar en las pruebas que van de 400 m a la milla (1.609 m).

 

 

Este reglamento había sido denunciado por Semenya, doble campeona olímpica de 800 metros, que rechaza plegarse a un tratamiento hormonal o a una operación, pero que había perdido los recursos intentados sobre todo ante el Tribunal Arbitral del Deporte (TAS).

El Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI) había pedido a las federaciones deportivas en noviembre de 2021 establecer sus propios criterios para permitir a las personas transgénero e intersexos participar en el alto nivel.

Desde entonces, la Unión Ciclista Internacional (UCI) adoptó un reglamento equivalente al de la “opción prioritaria” actual del atletismo. La Federación Internacional de Natación (Fina) limitó en junio de 2022 el acceso de sus categorías femeninas a las nadadoras “que se hicieron mujer antes de la pubertad”.

El presidente de World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, había entonces saludado la decisión de la Fina, precisando que, si se veía empujado a elegir entre “equidad” e “inclusión”, se iría “siempre al lado de la equidad”, para “proteger la integridad del deporte femenino”.
